Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has revealed that he has no relationship with former Reds boss Rafa Benitez – the only one of his ex managers that he does not have a bond with.
The former Kop hero left his boyhood club to join MLS side LA Galaxy over the summer, ending a career-long affinity with the Merseyside outfit.
Gerrard left Anfield having never won the Premier League title, but his crowning moment was winning the Champions League against AC Milan back in 2005.
Benitez was manager of the club at that point, but surprisingly the midfielder has revealed that he does not have a close bond with the Spanish trainer, who is now coaching Real Madrid.
“I don’t think Rafa Benitez liked me as a person. I’m not sure why, but that’s the feeling I got from him,” Gerrard is quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.
“I can pick up the phone and speak to all of my previous Liverpool managers. Except for Rafa.
“It’s a shame because we probably shared the biggest night of both our careers — the 2005 Champions League victory in Istanbul — and yet there is no bond between us.”
Liverpool missed Gerrard yesterday as they were lacking leadership and drive in a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, with the hosts overrunning the visitors in the centre of midfield in the clash.
