Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given believes that Manchester City outcast Joe Hart would be making a “great move” if he signed for the Magpies this summer.

The England number one is expected to move on before the transfer window shuts at the end of August as it has been made clear by City manager Pep Guardiola that he will not be first choice at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola made a swift change when he arrived as the club’s new boss last summer; sending Hart to Torino on loan and bringing Claudio Bravo.

Now Benfica’s Ederson has entered the fray, making it even harder for Hart to regain his number one spot with the two-time Premier League champions.

Given, who left Newcastle to join City for a two-year spell in 2009, believes that it is important for the 30-year-old to stay in the Premier League and play regularly, particularly as the 2018 World Cup in Russia is approaching.

He told talkSPORT:

“He has been cast aside by Guardiola but if West Ham or any of the other clubs that have been linked with him, even Newcastle he was linked with last week - I think that would be a great move for him as well.

“I just think Joe needs to get playing again. He played in Italy last year and we didn’t see much of him. I think he can go back to the Premier League, where people still want to see a top keeper, he could walk into most clubs.”

Rafael Benitez played Karl Darlow in goal for the majority of last season, but now Tim Krul has returned to the fold following loan spells at Ajax and AZ.

If Hart were to join the newly-promoted Premier League side, he is likely to be handed the number one role.
