David James is set to replace Robert Green as England's number one for Friday's World Cup showdown with Algeria, according to reports.

Green was guilty of committing an inexplicable error when he allowed a tame shot from Clint Dempsey to slip from his grasp during Saturday's Group C opener against the United States, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Speaking after the match, coach Fabio Capello vowed to talk to Green and assess his state of mind before making a decision over who would start in goal for the second game of the tournament.

The West Ham United keeper has taken a full part in training this week alongside James and fellow shot-stopper Joe Hart.

However, veteran Portsmouth keeper James is believed to have been given the nod to start against Algeria in Cape Town.

Capello only informs his players about the starting line-up two hours before games and was coy when pressed about his goalkeeping quandary at his pre-match press conference on Thursday evening.

He said:"When I chose Green last week he was in good form.

"He played very well in the first half of the friendly against Mexico. And even last week, the outcome was good for the team because usually you would lose the game after a mistake like that.

"But I have to choose the value of different players, not just think about their mistakes. I have to justify selecting the keeper I choose."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
