Arsenal are planning to trigger Julian Draxler’s £37million release clause at Schalke, having grown frustrated with club record signing Mesut Ozil, reports the Express.
The Gunners had been tipped to land Draxler last January, but Arsene Wenger was reluctant to pay such a large fee at the half way point of the season.
Arsenal were linked with the 20-year-old during the summer as well, but Wenger opted to sign Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona in a £30million deal instead.
But having seen the Gunners make a poor start to the 2014-15 campaign – in which they have managed just two wins from their opening seven matches – Wenger is set to revive his interest in Draxler to boost his injury hit squad.
The player most under threat from the arrival of Draxler is likely to be Arsenal’s club record signing Mesut Ozil.
The playmaker has struggled to replicate the kind of form that convinced Arsene Wenger to pay £42.5million for his services in the summer of 2013.
Ozil is also now likely to miss the next three months with a knee injury, meaning Draxler could well have relegated him to the bench by the time he returns to full fitness.
