Hargreaves released by Manchester City

Manchester City have released crocked midfielder Owen Hargreaves on a free transfer, after the former England international managed only 13 minutes of Premier League action in 2011-12.

The newly-crowned Premier League champions took a gamble on the midfielder last summer, signing him on a one-year contract despite long-standing knee injuries.

Hargreaves looked to be returning to action after scoring a long-range effort against Birmingham in the Carling Cup in September, but a lack of fitness prevented him from having any real impact upon City’s season, and he has now been released to find a new club.

City have wished Hargreaves well in his next move on their official website, and also confirmed that Gai Assulin, Ahmed Benali, Sean Tse, Paul Clowes, Luke Coulson, Tom Halsall and George King have all bee released.
