Heineken wins coveted award for StarPlayer game at Cannes Festival

Amsterdam 29 June 2011 – Heineken® has scooped a prestigious award at the 2011 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for its global StarPlayer game.

Launched back in April, Star Player is the hugely innovative live ‘dual screen’ football game that lets fans watch UEFA Champions League (UCL) matches on television whilst playing it in real-time, on a computer, iPhone or iPod touch.

StarPlayer is a ground-breaking digital initiative which transforms TV watching into a social interactive experience for football fans. The game, which was created and devised by digital agency AKQA, taps into competitive banter of the fans by creating a live TV game experience that can be played from wherever they are watching the UCL game.

StarPlayer was awarded the only Gold Lion award in the mobile division of the Cyber category. Heineken also took home six additional awards from the Cannes Festival, with Gold, Silver and Bronze Lions for the first two films of its new global ‘Legends’ brand campaign and for its cutting-edge UV Black Light STR bottle.

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is the world’s biggest and most respected celebration of creativity in communications. At this year’s event, more than 24,000 entries from all over the world were showcased and judged.

To play StarPlayer and score points, fans anticipate what will happen at key moments such as corners, free kicks, and penalties.Fans rely on their knowledge of the game in order to guess, for example, whether a shot will be saved or whether there will be a goal in the following 30 seconds. With every correct forecast, fans gain points. Through the ‘Interactive Star Player Leagues’, they can also compete and share with their friends via Facebook and with other players around the world.

The StarPlayer game is available to play on the Heineken Facebook page and download from the App Store for iPhone players in preparation for the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League season in September.   Play the game for free at the following links:
