Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has branded Thursday's Manchester derby against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium "the game of the season".

Man United will enter the fixture one spot and one point behind fourth-place Man City in the Premier League table, knowing that a win would move them level on points with third-place Liverpool.

The Red Devils will still have five Premier League fixtures to play after the Manchester derby, but Herrera has refused to play down the importance of Thursday's "massive game".

He told Man United's official website:

"It's going to be the game of the season. We are one point behind them and if we win, we have the chance to finish in the top four, but if they win, it will be very difficult for us.

"I don't know the 'winner takes all' expression but it's going to be a massive game. If one of us wins it, we are not going to lose a lot of games or make mistakes after that. It will be key.

"We are in a very good moment, on a very good run and we respect them, but we are doing a lot of good things and we have to show it on Thursday."

No team has lost fewer Premier League games than Man United (3) during the 2016-17 campaign, but no team has drawn more (12).

Jose Mourinho's side are also on a 23-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, which stretches back to a 4-0 defeat away to Chelsea on October 23.
