Arsene Wenger has come to the defence of club record signing Mesut Ozil, insisting he would spend £42.5million to land the German international again, reports the Daily Mail.
Ozil has been criticised for his poor performances this season, and was hauled off after 62 minutes of the Gunners dismal 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in midweek.
But Wenger has backed the 25-year-old to come good, and prove everyone he was right to spend a club record fee on him just over 12 months ago.
Wenger said: ‘I would pay the money again, of course.’
The Gunners boss has been criticised for fielding Ozil on the left hand side of midfield, but the Frenchman has defended his tactics ahead of this afternoons trip to Aston Villa.
Arsenal appear to have a host of midfielders who want to play the coveted number 10 position, but Wenger remains determined to fit them all into his first team.
‘Zinedine Zidane went to Real Madrid for £82m and he played on the left. He had to play there because in the middle they had Raul and Ronaldo and he made room and played on the left. When you have the ball you play where you want and go where you want.
‘It is a debate as old as the world. Since we played football. When you look at the Brazil team in 1970 they had Tostao, Rivelino, Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, Clodoaldo. They played all No 10 in their club. They didn’t know what to do. They put them all together and they won the World Cup convincingly.
‘What is Jack Wilshere but basically a No 10? He played his whole life at No 10. Somebody had to go out (wide against Dortmund). Is it Wilshere, Ozil, Aaron Ramsey? Nobody is really natural out wide.’
