James McClean received a telling off from his own teammates after his ill-judged tweet slamming his manager’s selection policy.

The Sunderland winger saved his international career with an instant apology, after his embarrassing rant on Twitter. He claimed to be ‘f***ing fuming’ at not playing any role in the Republic of Ireland’s fortuitous 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan.

Set to skipper Republic of Ireland against Oman at Craven Cottage, Kevin Doyle stated: “We said to him straight away – it’s not acceptable. We found out about it pretty much straight away.

“We ended up joking about it the next day; it’s been good because it has probably got him integrated into the group a bit more.”

This evening’s fixture sees debuts for McClean’s teammate David Meyler and Robbie Brady from Manchester United. With James McCarthy the only player set to keep his place in the team after Friday's win, it is likely had McClean kept his emotions bottled up he too would be starting, the ex- Derry City man is named on the substitutes bench.
