Jamie Carragher is set to miss the next three months after successfully undergoing an operation on a dislocated shoulder.
Liverpool's vice-captain sustained the injury during last Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.
His absence will be a huge loss for the Reds as he has been an ever-present during the campaign so far. His rehabilitation is now set to begin following his surgery and he could return for the final weeks of the season as Liverpool aim to secure a top four Champions League qualifying spot.
Speaking about the operation, Peter Brukner, Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science at Anfield, wrote on the club's official website:
"The operation went well.
"It also confirmed this was the correct course of action to take to ensure Jamie makes a complete recovery."
Liverpool are hoping to bounce back from their defeat against Spurs when they host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Monday.
