Chelsea captain John Terry has hailed team-mate Nemanja Matic as the club’s new ‘Claude Makelele’, Express reports.
Matic was purchased back to Chelsea for £21million at the beginning of the year and has been integral to their brilliant season, shielding the side’s back-four allowing more creative players to thrive up the pitch.
The Blues will face Stoke City on Monday and with the Serbian international expected to start once again alongside Cesc Fabregas, Blues captain Terry believes that Matic developing into an anchorman as good as Chelsea legend Claude Makelele.
“When I look back at the days when I first came here, you had Claude Makelele, who was the master in that position,” he told The Sun.
“Matic is the closest thing we’ve got to Makelele and he’s doing great for the team.
“At Newcastle, we missed him. But John Obi Mikel has come in and done brilliantly and that shows our strength in depth.”
Chelsea are tied on points at the top of the table with Manchester City – who already played – ahead of their Monday clash against Stoke.
