Athletic Bilbao have confirmed that they are considering a move to sign Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal as well as Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta, the Daily Star reports.
Although the Premier League pair are unlikely to consider a switch anytime soon, the La Liga side have revealed that if either of them wanted a move, they would consider a deal.
Bilbao’s president, Josu Urrutia, admitted that the Spanish pair were both on the club’s short-list in regards to their potential transfer additions.
He told AS: “There was interest from Athletic in players, although it was focused on [Real Madrid’s] Illarramendi.
“There are not so many players: [Asier] Illarramendi, Raúl García, [Nacho] Monreal, [Cesar] Azpilicueta.
“We have to be aware, monitoring whether they continue at their clubs [or not], it’s because they are interesting.”
Azpilicueta is currently Jose Mourinho’s first choice left back, with the Portuguese boss favouring him over former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis.
Like the Blues man, Monreal is unlikely to be allowed to leave by Arsene Wenger as he is currently seen as a versatile player capable of filling in at centre-back despite being a natural left-back.
The Spanish side are known for their strict transfer policy of only reinforcing their squad with players born in the Basque region or nearby areas, hence their chase for the two mentioned players.
