Wigan ace makes safety pledge

Southampton v Wigan Athletic - Barclays Premier LeagueAli Al-Habsi says the FA Cup Final against Manchester City will not be a distraction and is confident Wigan will beat the drop.

Latics are three points adrift of safety after both Sunderland and Aston Villa picked up results at the weekend, but the situation is still effectively in Wigan’s hands and Al-Habsi believes they will get out of trouble.

One of the games in hand is against Manchester City tomorrow night in a dress rehearsal of the Cup Final and Al-Habsi says there is enough quality in the squad to get the three victories that will be needed.

“We will do it. We will stay in the Premier League,” Al-Habsi said defiantly. “The FA Cup won’t distract us. Our squad is big enough to cope. We have been in this situation many times. We believe in ourselves and we will be OK. If we win we’re happy.

“This club is like a family. I believe in every single player here, no matter who is starting.”

Latics are just 90 minutes away from FA Cup glory but even if they lose, a place in Europe is guaranteed next season as long as City do not drop out of the top four, but Roberto Martinez would swap it all to stay in the Premier League.
