Leonardo still has Serie A title in his sights

Inter Milan manager Leonardo has not given up on winning the Serie A, targeting five wins in as many games beginning with Lazio on Saturday.Leonardo’s men are third, trailing league leaders AC Milan by eight points.

But the Brazilian believes his team has the ability to claim a sixth-straight Serie A title.

“It’s difficult to think you can recover eight points in five games, but we will try to win all our matches,” Leonardo said.

“We want to have a continuous flow of good games and results so we can do our best (and) then there is the Coppa Italia.”

“We are third in the league and the objective is to always win. We are only thinking about this.”

Inter will host Roma in the second-leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final on May 11 after taking a 1-0 win from the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.

Leonardo admitted his team was beginning to feel the effects of a long campaign but still expected a result against Lazio.

“The tiredness is normal. It’s enough to see the results of all the other teams fighting for their respective objectives,” Leonardo said.

“This team knew how to mask its tiredness against Roma who are a team capable of (getting) the best out of itself.”

“Lazio have beaten important teams, changing systems and players. Lazio are always Lazio. If they have all their best players available, they can line-up a great team.”

In their only meeting this season, Edoardo Reja’s men ha d a 3-1 win at the Stadio Olimpico in December last year.

The Inter boss said he was focused on achieving the targets set for the rest of the campaign, not whether he would still be at the club next season.

“No one is thinking about who will stay and who will go. I cannot worry about what happens next. I am focused on the objectives I have now, starting with Lazio,” he said.

A win for Inter would momentarily close the gap on AC Milan, who visit Brescia in a later Saturday kick-off, to five points.
