Any footballers that have played for Manchester City do not tend to speak favourably of neighbours Manchester United, but Joleon Lescott believes that Chelsea did the right thing in allowing Nemanja Matic to move to Old Trafford.

In fairness to Lescott, he was not pleased about the deal because it boosted United, but because Matic got his desired move.

In most cases Premier League clubs avoid doing transfer business with their direct rivals, but on this occasion, Chelsea agreed to sell.

The decision has drawn criticism from some quarters, but Lescott, who played for City between 2009 and 2014, believes that the Blues were being fair on the player.

Matic was expected to have his game time reduced had he stayed at Stamford Bridge, due to the arrival of summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko.

At United, though, it looks as though he will be a key player in Jose Mourinho's team as he put in a man-of-the-match display in Sunday's 4-0 win over West Ham United in the opening weekend of the season.

While on Sky Sports News, Lescott gave his verdict on the transfer.

“I was pleased that Chelsea let him go to Man United. I was surprised they let him go at all but I was glad to see a team didn’t restrict him from going to a team he wanted to go to, even if it is a rival.

“In terms of business done I think Manchester United is probably the best. They’ve probably bought the players they needed the most more than any other team. Matic proved that at the weekend."
