Ibrahim Afellay is contemplating his future after being told he will take up a fringe role in the Barcelona squad for the upcoming season, Talk Sport reveals.

Incoming manager Tito Vilanova held talks with the Dutchman earlier this week, and Afellay could be on his way to the Premier League, with Arsenal and Liverpool reported to be leading the race for his signature.

The 26 year old has endured a frustrating 18 months at the Nou Camp, managing just eight league starts having initially caught the eye of the La Liga side after impressing for PSV Eindhoven.

Now, Arsenal and Liverpool could be set to battle it out for the Dutch winger’s services, as both look to strengthen their forward lines ahead of the coming season. Having initially been linked to Ligue 1 side Lille as a potential Eden Hazard replacement, Afellay has since ruled out this speculation and England is said to be his preferred destination.

However, Inter Milan are also considering a swoop for Afellay, hoping they can persuade him to move to Italy, and having been valued at £6 million he could be a bargain should he live up to the promise he showed prior to his unsuccessful time in Spain.
