Liverpool star Martin Skrtel has rejected a contract offer from Inter Milan and is set to extend his stay at Anfield, according to reports from the Express.
Skrtel was heavily linked with an exit after his comments earlier this month that the Reds have offered him an unacceptable contract, resulting in Inter trying to lure the defender to the San Siro.
However, it seems that the Slovakia international has reached an agreement with the Liverpool hierarchy following these statements from his agent Karol Csonto.
“I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real,” said Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto.
“But then the deal did not go ahead, there was contact made.
“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool.
“As this time I can say that it is likely [he will sign a new contract].”
Meanwhile, the Reds are closing on the signing of Charlton Athletic youngster Joe Gomez, which will make the centre-back the fourth player to arrive this summer.
Liverpool have already secured deals for Manchester City midfielder James Milner, Burnley striker Danny Ings, and Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan, all on free transfers.
And Skrtel’s extension will come as a huge boost to the club as they look to break into the top four next season.
