Liverpool boss plays down sensational return for club legend

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has come out to reveal that Steven Gerrard is not likely to make a playing return to the club, Express reports.

The 35-year-old is currently playing for MLS side LA Galaxy and has recently been linked with a short-term loan back to Anfield during the off-season.

Klopp is said to have already held talks with Gerrard while also inviting him to train with the club, but has ruled out the chance of him featuring for the first team at this point.

“Of course our doors are always open for him, that is clear but he is under contract in the USA,” he said.

“During his break time I told him that you can come whenever you want, you can train with us, do whatever is good for you.

“But do you think he should play at the moment [for Liverpool] or next year? No. Why did you ask me?”

Apart from that, the former Borussia Dortmund boss also added that he is open to the idea of letting the midfielder come back for a role on the sidelines in the near future.

He still has another year left on his contract with the LA based club, but it is believed that he will make a return to Liverpool once his playing days are over.

The former England international spent 17 years playing for the senior team following his promotion from their youth academy, making over 500 appearances.
