An estimated £20 million bid was believed to be on the table with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to find potential replacements for the defender.

Van Gaal is in desperate need of a world class defender to reinforce his 3-5-2 formation as United only have Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones capable of playing the role.

With funds to make the deal happen not a factor for the Red Devils, they will be open to upping their bid in order to do all they can to acquire one of their top transfer targets.
