Liverpool keen on unwanted Barcelona defender

Liverpool are keen to sign former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen this summer.

That’s according to Sport Witness, who claim Spanish Media A.S are reporting that the Barcelona defender has been told he is free to leave the Camp Nou, putting the Reds on high alert.

Liverpool are currently being rivalled by AS Roma, as Vermaelen has fallen further down the Barca pecking order after the arrival of Samuel Umtiti.

Jurgen Klopp has been keen on bolstering his defence this summer, after adding Joel Matip on a free transfer from Schalke. But with injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez, and selling Brad Smith, Vermaelen could be the ideal utility back to cover for the German manager.

The Belgian has only managed 11 La Liga appearances with Barca, but was still in the national team that travelled to France for Euro 2016. There he made 4 appearances, but was suspended for their knockout game against Wales.

Liverpool face Barcelona on Saturday in the International Champions Cup.
