Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Arsenal can win the Premier League this season if they get knocked out of the Champions League, according to reports from the Mirror.
The Gunners shocked Manchester United on Sunday by going 3-0 up in the first 20 minutes of the clash, and held on for a massive result to push them to second on the table.
Now sitting only two points behind league leaders Manchester City, Arsene Wenger’s men have a great chance to become champions for the first time in 12 years if they can maintain their good form.
However, they have been disastrous in Europe, sitting bottom of their group after two losses in two games.
“Manchester United look short in certain areas, Chelsea look well off the pace. There’s only Man City really who look like the stand out team but even they (have had bad results),” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“Arsenal are never going to win the Champions League with this team, they always get knocked out in the quarter-finals at best, so if they go out earlier it may actually be an advantage for them. It may actually work for them.
“They will need things to go for them this season if they’re going to win the league. They’re not the best team, that’s Man City.
“[Going out] may give them a great chance this season. Next season Chelsea will be back, they’ll spend big again, United will spend big again.
“This might be a season for them [Arsenal].
“Arsenal need to win a title, that has to be their main aim.”
Gunners legend Thierry Henry also agreed with Carragher, adding that they may not get a better chance with champions Chelsea currently struggling so far this season.
He said: “They must win the league this season. They must win it, because of what Jamie just said.
“I don’t know if they will get a better chance. They must.
Arsenal will face Watford at Vicarage Road after the international break before they play Bayern Munich the following week in their third Champions League fixture.
