Liverpool are set to step up their interest in 19-year-old FC Basel midfielder Granit Xhaka by making a second visit to scout him after Director of Football Damien Comolli received glowing reports about the Swiss starlet.
Xhaka impressed Liverpool scouts with a fantastic display in Basel’s 1-0 win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and Comolli has given scouts the green light to step up their research on him. Liverpool will have to act fast if they are to land their target, with Bundesliga club Hamburg, who have already had Xhaka on trial, reportedly considering making a 5 million euro offer for the teenager.
Liverpool also face interest from other Premiership clubs, Basel director Georg Heitz said “I do not like naming names, I can only say there’s many clubs who follow him, not just Manchester United.” (Metro)
Xhaka, who has six caps for Switzerland, is almost certain to leave Basel in the summer, fits perfectly into Liverpool’s new mandate of young players who have potential sell on value, and is exactly the type of midfielder Kenny Dalglish’s side have been lacking. If Liverpool can beat their rivals to his signature it will show that the Carling Cup Champions are heading in the right direction to becoming one of Europe’s biggest clubs again.
