Liverpool will be allowed to sign Georginio Wijnaldum this summer, but only if they include Lucas as part of the deal.
That’s according to the Telegraph, who claim Rafa Benitez is insisting he is reunited with the Brazilian, who he brought to Anfield when he was the Reds boss.
Liverpool are keen on Wijnaldum, but aren’t interested in matching the £27million price tag the relegated club have set, nearly twice the fee they paid PSV to sign him. The Dutchman only joined the club last summer, but scored 11 goals in a failed attempt to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.
Lucas’ future at Anfield is once again being questioned, as it was last summer, despite the Brazilian playing in 27 league fixtures last season.
The 29-year-old was a huge favourite of Benitez when the Spaniard managed the Reds, and he could well lower the £27million fee for Wijnaldum if Lucas is included in the deal.
Newcastle would have no issues paying Lucas’ wages.
