Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Reds number one goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has to improve his performance with the club preparing a move for ex-Barcelona shot-stopper Victor Valdes, Express reports.
Mignolet became Liverpool’s first choice keeper after making a £9million move from Sunderland back in the summer of 2013, replacing Pepe Reina who then made a move to Napoli.
However despite pulling the occasional heroic save, the Belgian has been prone to lapses in concentration and many supporters believe he isn’t the right man for the club.
The Reds currently sit 14th in the Premier League, a large contrast from last season which saw Brendan Rodgers’ men almost finish the campaign with a league title and many have pointed to Mignolet as a chink the Liverpool armour.
And with Rodgers already looking to fix the issue with a move for Valdes, Kop legend Jamie Carragher feels Mignolet needs to up his game or risk losing his spot.
He said, “I think the best goalkeepers who win big trophies make big saves at big moments. That was a big moment. It’s not a massive mistake, but can he do better?
“Everyone always talks about Steven Gerrard slipping and costing Liverpool the league and you can never look at one individual and one mistake, but Demba Ba still had to go through. You’re looking at your keeper and thinking: ‘Come on, win us the league. Make that save that’s going to be a defining moment in the season.’
“Against Manchester City Liverpool lost 2-1 and if he’d made the save from Negredo then that’s two points off City and another one for Liverpool.”
