Liverpool star Joseph Gomez could miss the rest of the season after sustaining a knee injury while on England U21 duty, according to reports from ESPN.
Gomez was stretchered off the field 80 minutes into the Young Lions’ 3-0 win over Kazakhstan on Tuesday, but it was thought that the injury wasn’t too serious after comments made by England youth manager Gareth Southgate.
However, after additional inspection, the 18-year-old seems to have ruptured a knee ligament that is set to force him out for approximately nine months.
This will come as a major blow to new Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who was hoping to have a fully fit squad as he attempts to find his best XI for the season.
Gomez was given a starting role by previous manager Brendan Rodgers in Liverpool’s first few games, but the youngster has seen his place taken by Alberto Moreno in recent fixtures.
