Liverpool ace Mario Balotelli has been banned for one game by the English Football Association after the Italian posted a controversial post on Instagram, Sky Sports reports.
Balotelli was also given a fine of £25,000 along with the need to attend an education programme to improve his behaviour.
“The club acknowledges the decision reached by the independent panel and due consideration will be given to the written judgement once we receive it from the FA,” a Liverpool representative said.
“Any further action taken by ourselves in relation to this matter is between the club and player.”
The Italian posted an image of computer gaming icon Super Mario along with comments that seemed to portray a racial stereotype.
The former AC Milan star did apologize over his misconduct, although he did argue the post was supposed to be humorous and not racist in any manner.
“Following the recent events related to my ‘Super Mario’ post, the FA decision has made clear that it was wrong,” he wrote.
“I am sorry that my team-mates and supporters of Liverpool FC have to be penalised for something I did and now come to regret.
“It is my intention to comply with the decision of the FA and make sure it never happens again.”
Balotelli will miss Liverpool’s home clash against Arsenal this Sunday.
