Free agent Victor Valdes has stunned Manchester United by rejecting a contract offer while training with the Red Devils, Metro reports.
The Spaniard left Barcelona at the end of last season and is currently working on his fitness with the Red Devils in order to recover from a knee problem he sustained early this year.
Valdes was heavily linked with moves to Ligue-1 side Monaco and Liverpool, but the transfers fell through due to concerns over the extent of his injury.
However according to the Spanish media,United manager Louis van Gaal offered the 32-year-old shot stopper a contract to play for the Red Devils.
But Valdes, to United’s surprise, turned down their offer as the former Spain international has no intentions of playing second-fiddle to Man United number-one David de Gea.
This has therefore left the door open for Liverpool, who are unconvinced by Simon Mignolet as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and bringing Valdes can provide some much needed competition for the under-fire Belgian.
