Liverpool target Joel Matip is set to decide on his future with Schalke during the January window ahead of a possible free transfer in the summer, Daily Star reports.
The 24-year-old has emerged as a potential target for manager Jurgen Klopp given recent injuries to centre-back pair Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel.
Matip recently rejected a four year extension with the Bundesliga outfits, a factor that could push for his sale during the January window.
Schalke general manager Horst Heldt admitted that he already spoke with the defender and will receive a final decision next month.
“Our competition is tough, [but] we had a very good conversation,” he said.
“We will meet in January again, then he will decide.”
The Reds aren’t the only side monitoring the situation of the Cameroon international as Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has also sent scouts to monitor his displays in the 1-0 win over Hoffenheim at the weekend.
He has featured in 17 Bundesliga matches and three Champions League games this term, scoring three goals while providing another one assist so far.
