Liverpool are looking to sign FC Schalke star Joel Matip in the transfer window next summer, with the defender’s contract running out at the end of the campaign, according to reports from the Express.
Matip has been heavily linked with a move away from the Bundesliga in recent weeks due to his expiring contract, with Newcastle United also monitoring his current situation.
However, with veteran centre-back Kolo Toure set to depart next summer, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be keen on adding another defender and is preparing an offer for the Cameroon international.
Pre-contract talks can begin as soon as January, and if an agreement is made, Matip will join Liverpool on a free transfer when the season finishes next May.
Klopp is also keeping tabs on Matip’s team-mate Leroy Sane, who has emerged as one of the best young attackers in the Bundesliga.
Matip, 24, has made 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.
