Liverpool have joined Manchester United and Barcelona in the chase to sign Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal, Express reports.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is considering a move for Vermaelen after the recent £20million capture of Dejan Lovren from Southampton.
The Gunner is unhappy playing second-fiddle to the first choice centre-back pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, alerting interest from Europe’s top sides.
A move from Liverpool for Vermaelen could however be the end for Daniel Agger’s time at Anfield, with the Dane also a target for Spanish giants Barcelona.
He publicly voiced his concerns in regards to last season, stating: “It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things.
“Many things can happen in football and I do not want to exclude anything.”
At the moment Vermaelen is demanding a £70,000-a-week salary, which could be too high for Liverpool with Manchester United extremely keen on bringing defensive cover after the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Barcelona are also interested in the 28-year-old, but could monitor the situation in the case Agger becomes available.
