Jamie Carragher, who spent his whole senior career at Liverpool, has urged his former side to sign Everton’s James McCarthy this summer.
Speaking to the Irish Examiner, the Sky Sports pundit said:
“I love McCarthy, I think he’s a brilliant player.
“If there was one player I could take from Everton to Liverpool, it would be James McCarthy.
“I think he’s just got to add goals. Jordan Henderson was maybe at that stage a year ago, where you really like what you see but there could be a few more goals or assists to take him up another level.
“Even though James McCarthy plays a more defensive role, he’s shown he can get forward.
“He’s a complete midfield player — he works hard, he can tackle, he can pass. I think eventually he’ll be the captain there.”
Brendan Rodgers is looking for a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard – who was sent off after less than a minute after coming on against Manchester United today – with the current Reds captain heading to MLS at the end of the season having signed a pre-contract agreement with LA Galaxy.
Jordan Henderson has been tipped to fill to vacancy by Gerrard, although Carra clearly prefers the look of the former Wigan Athletic midfielder.
McCarthy has made 28 appearances for Roberto Martinez’s team this season, and has bagged two Man of the Match awards in the process.
The last player to make the switch across Merseyside was Abel Xavier; he is also the only player to play in both derbies for both teams in the same season.
