Newcastle’s four points from their last two Premier League games have given Rafa Benitez the slightest hope of pulling off the greatest of escapes. However, this trip to Anfield will carry a bit more than any of his other fixtures this season. Jurgen Klopp is already a vastly popular man on Merseyside, but few have as much affection from the Kop as Rafa Benitez – who famously led them to the most unlikely of Champions League wins in 2005.
The Geordie fan base will hope that the return for Benitez will not prove too distracting, whilst Liverpool’s upcoming European commitments could well change their approach to the match.
Liverpool have lost just one of their last nine Premier League matches and, along with West Ham and Manchester United, will still be optimistic of a top four finish. The sizzling form of Roberto Firmino and Danny Sturridge should easily compensate for the injury to Divock Origi, but Klopp may be tempted to rest some of his stars with such a big game next week.
And, hot off the press, its the XIs!
