Newcastle have been monitoring Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita and have contacted the club to enquire about his availability, according to the player's agent.

The 23-year-old helped the Amsterdam-based outfit retain their Eredivisie title in 2011-12, and has attracted attention from the Premier League.

Anita's agent Harry Lulofs has confirmed that the Tyneside club have tabled an offer for his client, with the Dutch side will now weigh up.

"Ajax are very satisfied with the guy [Anita] and want to keep him, but Newcastle have been watching him for a long time and really want to sign him," Lulofs speaking exclusively to NUFC Fans.

"This is the first offer Ajax have received for Vurnon and we'll soon see how they react.

"The only other Premier League club to get in touch was Norwich. Paul Lambert called me to ask about him.

"Now he has moved to Aston Villa so maybe they will be in touch. I don't know," he stated.

Newcastle have already started their summer transfer business with the signature of Roman Amalfitano from Reims, but Alan Pardew is hoping to bring in a number of other new faces during the window.
