Manchester City are looking to beat Manchester United in the race to sign Koke by offering Atletico Madrid £44million for their player, according to reports from the Daily Star.
United are reportedly considering an ambitious swap deal to bring Koke to Old Trafford, with attacking midfielder Juan Mata going in the other direction.
But the Citizens are highly interested in signing the Spain international, and are set to match Atletico’s £44million release clause or use out-of-favour striker Stevan Jovetic in a part-exchange deal.
Jovetic has never fully adapted to the Premier League since his £22million switch from Fiorentina, and City boss Manuel Pellrgrini is already hoping to offload the Montenegro international after just two years of service.
And although Koke is Pellegrini’s priority target, the Premier League champions have also been linked to Borussia Dortmund ace Marco Reus as an adequate alternative.
However, the Germany international recently extended his contract with Dortmund, making a summer switch highly unlikely.
