Manchester City star Pablo Zabaleta has come out to back under-performing Manchester United ace Angel Di Maria, according to reports from the Express.
The £59.7million winger has struggled so far this season and could even be benched in the upcoming Manchester derby at Old Trafford this weekend.
Di Maria was left out of the starting eleven in United’s last two fixtures where they picked up two consecutive wins against Liverpool and Aston Villa, hinting that his services may not be of importance to the Red Devils.
However, Zabaleta has revealed that he spoke to the former Real Madrid attacker over his move and concluded that the Argentina international just needs some time before he will become the player he once was.
“I have met Angel a few times in Manchester and obviously spoken when we’ve been on international duty together and it’s been a very tough season for him not only on the field but off it as well and that has made things hard for his family,” he said.
“Sometimes when you are in a different country it can take time to settle well and because his price tag was so high, that also adds a lot of pressure, but I have no doubts he will become a big success for United because he’s a top quality player and if he’s not at his best at the moment, he’s still a great asset to have.”
The winger has been deployed in a number of positions by Van Gaal this season, featuring from the starting whistle 19 times, scoring only three goals so far, but has managed to provide 10 assists.
