Manchester United and Chelsea are stepping up the chase in the attempt to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to reports from the Mirror.
Varane has been heavily linked to the Premier League duo in recent transfer windows, but could now be set to leave the European champions after falling down the defensive pecking order.
The France international has only started 11 La Liga games this season, fuelling speculation that he is looking to find regular first-team football away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the 21-year-old – who he purchased while in charge of Real Madrid from Lens back in 2011 – and sees Varane as the perfect replacement for Blues captain John Terry.
Meanwhile, United manager Louis van Gaal is also keen on a world-class defender, and may consider Varane as the perfect alternative to top target Mats Hummels.
But with Varane’s contract expiring in the summer of 2020, it would take a bid in the region of £25million to entice Real to mull over a sale.
