Manchester United and rivals Manchester City are set to go head to head for Barcelona ace Ivan Rakitic, Express reports.
Rakitic only signed for the Catalan giants in the summer from Sevilla, but it seems that the Croatia international has failed to impress manager Luis Enrique.
And although he has made 20 appearances, critics are uncertain the midfielder has the right attributes to fit in Barcelona’s system.
This has therefore put Rakitic’s immediate future in doubt, which will have alerted Man United boss Louis van Gaal, who tried to sign the former Schalke star during the summer.
The Red Devils are extremely keen on signing a box-to-box midfielder in this January window, and could renew their interest in Rakitic after learning that AS Roma will not sell first-choice target Kevin Strootman.
United will however face some stiff competition from Premier League champions Man City, with Rakitic seen as the perfect replacement for the departing Frank Lampard.
It has been suggested that Barcelona could listen to offers for Rakitic in the region of £20million, which is £6million more than the cost of bringing him to the Nou Camp.
