Manchester United target Nicolas Otamendi is being tipped to remain at Valencia by club legend Mario Kempes, according to reports from the Express.
The 27-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford ever since the start of the summer, but could now miss out on his services.
Kempes revealed that he was told by the club that they will be doing all they can to ensure that Otamendi remains with them for the upcoming campaign.
“I think it’s going to stay,” he said.
“The club has told me they are doing everything possible for him to stay.
“It is important for the club and for him. It will not be long before he decides to stay.”
United were ready to table a £35million offer for his services, but was told by the La Liga giants that he was not for sale, forcing manager Louis van Gaal to continue his search for a centre-back elsewhere.
He was also targeting Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos, another top candidate to reinforce his backline, but the Spain international is likely to remain at the Bernabeu following confirmations from manager Rafa Benitez.
The Red Devils were told that they will need to pay up to £64million if they wanted to sign Ramos, a valuation they are not willing to meet.
