Manchester United have been boosted by the news that Real Madrid are looking to sign Stoke City star Asmir Begovic rather than club number one David de Gea, Express reports.
De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the past few transfer windows, following some impressive displays for the Red Devils.
The Spain goalkeeper is yet to extend his contract at Old Trafford, fuelling speculation that he could leave at the end of the season.
However, it seems that Real are set to turn their attentions elsewhere and have set their sights on Stoke’s Begovic to replace veteran shot-stopper Iker Casillas.
The Bosnian, who was previously targeted by Arsenal and Liverpool, is also negotiating a new Potters contract, but will now consider his options amid interest from the European champions.
But Stoke boss Mark Hughes is reluctant to let his first choice goalkeeper leave, and hopes that he extends his deal at the Britannia.
“We want to be a team that’s consistently in the top ten,” he said.
“To be able to do that you need key players in key areas of the field and obviously goalkeeper is a key position in any good team and Asmir has been exceptional for us for a long time now.’
“We’re talking and those talks are going to be concluded in the summer.
“Hopefully they are going to be concluded in our favour.”
