Manchester United look to now be in pole position to sign Ron Vlaar from Aston Villa after he is said to have asked the club to double his current wages or risk losing him in January, Daily Star reports.
The 29-year-old became a top target after a very impressive performance for the Netherlands during their World Cup run, with Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Southampton, and Roma all monitoring his situation.
Villa have prepared a potential £50,000-a-week deal for their current captain, but with United’s spending power, they will be able to offer a lot more to lure him to Old Trafford.
Vlaar is said to only cost £4million and with his contract expiring in June, Paul Lambert will either let him leave in January for a minimal fee or lose him on a free transfer during the summer.
However, Lambert will definitely be urging the board to consider their options in the hopes that they can convince him to stay at Villa Park given their impressive start to the Premier League.
