Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that his side were very lucky to come away 1-0 winners against Everton, Skysports reports.
Both teams went into the match with attacking intent, but United forward Anthony Martial eventually rewarded his manager with all three points.
He netted in the 54th minute after getting on the receiving end of a cross from substitute Timothy Fosu-Mensah as Van Gaal continues his push for a top four finish.
The result means his team is still only a point behind Manchester City in fourth as they overtook West Ham United, who drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace into fifth place.
Despite picking up all three points, the Dutch boss admitted that his players didn’t play very well and were very fortunate that the match ended the way it did.
“I think it was more or less a stolen victory,” he said.
“We didn’t play so well. It looked like we were not fresh enough, despite the extra days to prepare. You do not know how the players are going to come back after the international break.
“We scored a very good goal I have to say, and I am very happy with the victory, but they [Everton] could have scored two goals so today we were the lucky team.”
The Red Devils face another tough task this coming weekend as they will travel to face second place side Tottenham Hotspur.
