Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is pushing David De Gea to prepare for the upcoming campaign despite his future still being uncertain, Express reports.
The 24-year-old is valued as a key member of the squad following an impressive performance the previous term, earning himself heavy interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid.
However, his manager is now urging him to get ready for the new season and expects him to play in goal against Barcelona as part of their USA tour.
De Gea is said to be suffering a back injury, but Van Gaal admitted that the Spain international is likely to feature against the Spanish champions.
“I have good hope he can play against Barcelona,” he said.
“He was injured and couldn’t play against San Jose so I said, ‘go stand in the goal so we have a point of direction for my attackers, but don’t do anything to risk your injury’.
“That is because we have to build him up [for the new season]. I think he can play [against Barcelona] and I hope he can.”
Between now and the first Premier League game on August 8th, United will play Barca and then Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain before heading back to England.
With no further advances over his departure, the Dutch manager should be feeling confident over the fact that his goalkeeper will be still part of the squad when they face Tottenham Hotspur in two weeks time.
