Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has hinted that Ander Herrera is not guaranteed a place in the starting 11 despite his displays against Everton, according to reports from the Daily Star.
The 26-year-old was present from the start in the 3-0 victory over the Toffees at the weekend, scoring one goal while providing another assist to captain Wayne Rooney.
Herrera struggled to hold down a regular starting role ever since the summer arrivals of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Despite the fans calling for Van Gaal to play the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder on a regular basis, the Dutch boss admitted that he could be dropped depending on the opponent’s style of play.
“That is dependable on the qualities of the opponent. When Herrera is playing like that it is difficult to not select him, but I can do it.” he said.
He only managed to register three starts so far this term, featuring a further two times from the bench, but has already netted two goals and provided a further one assist.
The Red Devils will now face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League group stages in midweek before hosting rivals Manchester City in the Premier League at the weekend.
