Man United boss open to idea of benching struggling captain

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is said to be considering the option of benching Wayne Rooney after a number of unconvincing displays, Express reports.

The 30-year-old once again failed to find the net at the weekend when his side drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace.

The side have now gone three consecutive games without scoring a single goal, prompting Van Gaal to begin looking at alternative ways to get his attack back on track.

He admitted that he is open to the idea of resting Rooney, but also added that every player in his squad risk the chance of being dropped if they fail to perform consistently.

“Yes, I would consider it but not only for Wayne. I have done that for all my players. I have done that, for example with Paddy McNair who was in Ireland last week. When we think it is for the best, I will do that,” he said.

“That is not a big issue for me but it is more a big issue for the players. They are not so easy to convince.”

England legend Alan Shearer has also come out to convince the Dutch boss to drop his club captain following his recent decline in form.

The striker has so far made 10 Premier League appearances this term, but only managed to score two goals, a factor that has also seen some of the fans turn on him.
