Man United boss plays down need for new striker

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has played down the need for a new striker as he prepares to deploy Wayne Rooney for the role, Daily Mail reports.

The 29-year-old club captain has been used in a variety of positions last season, but after seeing a number of new midfield reinforcements being brought in, he could once again lead United’s front line.

Both Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie have left Old Trafford this summer with the club linked with a host of high profile strikers to fill the void.

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani, and Liverpool-bound Christian Benteke have all been linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

However, with Rooney being tipped to be named as Van Gaal’s main striker for the upcoming campaign, the Dutch boss may be able to turn his attentions to his more desired defensive reinforcements.

The Red Devils have been chasing Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos since the start of the summer and are also said to be closing in on a deal to sign Valencia star Nicolas Otamendi.
