Manchester United are closing in on a £22million deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid ahead of Chelsea, who are also said to be interested in the defender, according to reports from the Metro.
The 21-year-old has been linked with both the Blues as well as Arsenal in recent months, after speculation that he was unhappy with his limited role under Carlo Ancelotti and could be allowed to leave for an acceptable fee.
Varane has often been benched in favour of Sergio Ramos and Pepe, who have been occupying the two central defensive roles, despite usually starting for the France national team.
He has only made 12 La Liga starts out of a possible 24 this season and, with Louis van Gaal keen on reinforcing his back line, the Dutch boss is set to splash the cash on the highly rated defender.
The European champions are believed to be open to letting the French centre-back leave, as he was reportedly used as bait in a potential swap deal involving Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois.
