Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he is looking to sign a fast winger, but has played down his desire to sign Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben, Express reports.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Robben in the January transfer window, with earlier sources already suggesting that the Netherlands international has agreed to join following a bust-up with team-mate Robert Lewandowski.
However, ahead of United’s Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven, Van Gaal has denied his interest in Robben, stating that it is a fabrication from the media just like the club’s supposed link with Cristiano Ronaldo.
“If I answer that question, then you are writing [United are trying to sign] Robben, what you have written about Ronaldo and that I didn’t say,” Van Gaal said.
But, the former Barcelona coach did confirm he wants to sign a pacey winger to bring balance to his line-up.
“Still I need more balance in my selection,” he added.
“I want that we have also fast wingers and that is a better balance in the team.”
A win for United against PSV will guarantee them a spot in the knock-out phase of the Champions League, while in the English top flight they face league leaders Leicester City at the KingPower Stadium this weekend.
