Man United defensive target tipped for Southampton contract extension

Manchester United look to have been dealt a blow in their chase to sign Nathaniel Clyne after comments made by their Head of Football Development, Talksport reports.

Despite the 24-year-old being heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, Les Reed has revealed that talks between the right-back and the Saints are looking positive.

“We’re in constant communication,“ he said.

“These contract negotiations are never just one meeting, where everything is done and sorted out.

“I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t speculation about him, but at the moment the signs are good.”

Manager Louis van Gaal is very keen on adding a natural right sided defender into his squad, as winger Antonio Valencia is currently the first choice selection.

Rafael, who also plays in the position, has been struggling with fitness as well as form throughout the campaign, and is now being linked with a potential Old Trafford exit.

Clyne has been a standout player under manager Ronald Koeman at the St Mary’s Stadium this season, and is also being linked with potential moves to Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

He has been a regular feature for his side this season, already making 33 appearances in all competition, scoring two goals.
