Man United legend believes star goalkeeper may put contract talks on hold

Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel believes David De Gea may wait until the end of the season before deciding to extend his stay, Daily Star reports.

The 24-year-old is one of the team’s stand-out performers so far and was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid prior to the January window.

De Gea was targeted by the European champions as a potential replacement for Iker Casillas, who spent his entire career at the Santiago Bernabeu, making 500 appearances so far.

Apart from the Spain international being a top candidate between the sticks for Madrid, the La Liga giants were also considering a move for Chelsea’s number one, Thibaut Courtois.

United are still sweating on the decision of their star keeper, and if he does decide to continue his stay, it will be a huge boost for his manager, the squad, as well as Schmeichel himself.

“I suspect that he’s just having a look at how this season is going to pan out. All I know is what I read from the media but the only thing I really can say is I hope he will sign.

“I hope he gives everybody that bit of good news because it would have another effect on many other future dealings with players so hopefully he will sign.”
