Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has claimed that his former side’s 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday was their best performance so far this season, Mirror reports.
Ahead of their clash against CSKA at Old Trafford, the Red Devils finished their last three fixtures with a 0-0 score-line, but that unwanted streak finally ended when Wayne Rooney headed in a late winner against the Russian outfit.
And despite almost going another full 90 minutes without a goal, Schmeichel was extremely impressed with Louis van Gaal’s men, singling out Rooney for praise amid his recent struggles.
“It is the best I have seen United play this season,” he told Sky Sports.
“It looks like Van Gaal may have listened to us – a little change of personnel, with Rooney playing off Martial, who was playing through the middle.
“And actually Rooney played really, really well. It looks like that is his position. Late on, he got into the No 9 position and he scored from that, but he drops deep, can pass the ball.
“He has a little bit of the same ability as Paul Scholes in that he can drop deep and put those long balls into the corners for the quick players to run for. And I thought he played really, really well today.
“He has done that when Fergie was manager and he has done that exceptionally well. But today I thought he played fantastic.”
The victory pushed United one step closer to qualifying for the knock-out phase, with the Red Devils top of the group with 7 points while PSV Eindhoven and Wolfsburg are 2nd and 3rd respectively with 6 each.
In the Premier League, Man United will host West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford as they attempt to stay in the top four.
